Education is the future; without it, we cannot build a hope for Romanian young people. Therefore, to complement their work in helping the poor to eat today, Dorca are setting up a Pupil Sponsorship Scheme to equip their neighbours to function tomorrow. Dorca already run classes in maths, electronics, IT, Romanian, and art, and these will continue.
However in addition, we would like to sponsor promising students at the local secondary school so that they can continue their education there, and through to university, if appropriate. The realities of education are expensive in a country where the average wage is £200 per month, and where the prices of many staple items are now much the same as they are over here.
In the short term, staying at school means paying out for books and equipment, plus not going out to work, or helping in the fields. These are real sacrifices – all the more so because many of the pupils nominated for this scheme do not form part of a family where anybody earns £200 per month!
In return for your commitment to your young person, we will send you a photo and brief dossier, along with regular letters from them, and also reports from us when news becomes available. Do also write to them – and especially pray for them. Most have excellent marks in English, so you would be doing them a double favour by writing to them in their principal foreign language!
